Abstract
Abstract In April 1984, Customs and Excise raided the gay and lesbian bookshop Gay’s the Word. In the raid hundreds of books were seized, on the allegation that they were obscene. This set off an important public and legal battle around gay and lesbian rights. Gay’s the Word rallied public support to oppose Customs and Excise and insist that works dealing with gay and lesbian subjects were not obscene. Against this, Customs and Excise relied upon arguments that make clear the tight boundaries around gay and lesbian culture. This chapter is an exploration of gay and lesbian rights and the policing of sexuality.
