Abstract
Abstract This chapter introduces the book’s content and themes by examining how two rival political cultures came into conflict in 1980s London: Thatcherite neoliberalism and a new form of social democracy in the form of the Greater London Council. Both offered different visions of the city’s development. The chapter surveys the current literature on the 1980s, on Thatcherism, and on the politics of late twentieth-century London. It outlines the approach of the book, which concentrates on one particular year, 1984, as a way of exploring how political change in a variety of forms was experienced at different registers in the city.
