La place qu’occupe le corps à l’intersection du religieux et du politique mérite une attention particulière. Cet ouvrage la lui accorde en mobilisant une diversité de disciplines scientifiques et en comparant une pluralité de traditions religieuses et de contextes sociopolitiques. Il entend ainsi resituer et élargir le débat sur la laïcité et la visibilité du religieux, en focalisant sur le corps et ses dimensions genrées, ce que les réflexions sur les principes, les lois et les modèles de laïcité se contentent trop souvent d’effleurer. Pour ce faire, les chapitres réunis ici se penchent non seulement sur la gestion des signes religieux portés sur le corps dans les sphères publiques ou privées, mais aussi sur l’encadrement et les répercussions de pratiques religieuses touchant le corps dans des domaines aussi variés que la sexualité, la santé et la mode. Des exemples portant sur la perception des tenues de femmes musulmanes et mennonites au Québec et au Canada, les stratégies vestimentaires de membres d’organisations non gouvernementales chrétiennes aux Nations unies, les rituels corporels des communautés « transgenres » hijra en Inde ou encore la santé reproductive des femmes et la religion en Irlande permettent ainsi d’explorer comment les dimensions corporelles et matérielles du religieux influencent profondément la place et la visibilité qui lui sont accordées dans différents contextes.
