Abstract
Sarcopenia, a condição de maior perda de massa magra com o envelhecimento, é uma condição que afeta pelo menos 15 % da população idosa, e tem implicação social pelo risco de comorbidades como hipertensão, diabetes, quedas, entre outras condições que afetam a senilidade e aumenta o nível de dependência dessa população. Com a população mundial envelhecendo, a sarcopenia se torna importante origem de doenças crônicas na senilidade ou intensifica o risco dessas comorbidades. Apesar de muitos trabalhos confirmarem que há sarcopenia nessa faixa etária, poucos trabalhos associam sarcopenia a condições de nascimento, como peso, comprimento e idade gestacional correlata; nenhum trabalho prospectivo acompanhou recém nascidos para se estudar o comportamento da massa magra ao longo da vida. Essa revisão demonstra a necessidade de tal coorte, possivelmente prevendo quais abordagens ao longo da vida poderíam ser utilizadas para reduzir essa perda muscular e assim reduzir o risco de comorbidades na senilidade.
