Abstract
Le monde rural se caractérise par sa grande diversité. Les localités rurales du Canada atlantique ne font pas exception à ce constat, notamment sur le plan démographique, où celles-ci évoluent dans un sens comme dans l’autre en fonction de différents facteurs à la fois conjoncturels et structurels. L’objectif de cet article consiste à illustrer les principales trajectoires évolutives de la démographie des milieux ruraux du Canada atlantique à diverses échelles géographiques entre 1981 et 2021. Notre analyse est effectuée en considérant les strates de taille démographique des localités ainsi que leur taux d’évolution sur cette période Elle révèle, en l’espace de 40 ans, un dépeuplement généralisé de la population rurale, principalement à cause du déclin observé dans de nombreuses localités de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador et, dans une moindre mesure, dans les trois provinces maritimes. Toutefois, la période 2016-2021 se démarque par une rupture démographique caractérisée par une remontée de la population rurale, probablement en raison de la pandémie, à l’exception de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador
