Le regard que Baudelaire porte sur Delacroix fait de celui-ci le peintre par excellence du romantisme, à un moment cependant où Baudelaire entrevoit la nécessité d’un art qui exprimerait une autre face de « la vie moderne » ; il fait de lui le peintre de l’imagination, à un moment où s’effondre l’univers analogique des correspondances ; il fait de lui le peintre de la couleur et de l’union des arts, à un moment où sont rendues inévitables la « décrépitude » de la peinture et la déréliction de la poésie.
