À maints égards, il faut hélas en convenir, le débat sur la laïcité qui a eu cours au Québec durant de nombreux mois aura été profondément désolant.Si je devais résumer en quelques mots ce qui lui confère ce caractère, je dirais qu'il a trop souvent consisté, pour les uns comme pour les autres, à « empoisonner le puits ».L'empoisonnement de puits est, comme on le sait, cette stratégie rhétorique par laquelle on assimile la position que l'on combat à quelque chose d'à ce point répréhensible et détesté que l'on espère dégoûter quiconque de l'eau de ce puits.Chacun trouvera sans mal de nombreux cas où cette stratégie a en effet été employée dans le débat sur la charte.On n'a pas manqué de faire valoir, par exemple, que les partisans de l'adoption de la charte proposée par le Parti québécois étaient racistes, xénophobes, homophobes ou islamophobes ; on a assuré que cette charte, utilisée pour détourner l'attention de problèmes véritables et sérieux, n'était qu'un simple calcul électoral, que rien n'en justifiait la présentation puisque les outils juridiques disponibles permettaient déjà de résoudre les rares cas problématiques du vivre-ensemble et d'accommodements.De leur côté, les adversaires de la charte ont été accusés tantôt de promouvoir un multiculturalisme antiquébécois, voire « québécicide » et ennemi du fait français, tantôt d'être aveugle devant la montée de l'intégrisme.
