Abstract
Canada prides itself on the diverse range of cultural backgrounds possessed by its citizens. However, the country’s approach to racial identities is hollow. Racialized citizens act as trophies: sitting on a shelf, collecting dust until a member of the white settler narrative decides to show surface-level details, celebrations, and other aspects of the individual that produce little meaningful knowledge or connection. This chapter analyzes the legal and social colorblindness of multiculturalism and its perpetuation of a white settler narrative within Canadian curricular content and schools while also recognizing the tactical use of cultural funds of knowledge. Browning and culturally sustaining pedagogies are elaborated on to help re-envision shifts in education’s settler narrative. Teachers are encouraged to reflect on their instruction and resource knowledge to better reflect the realities of the students they serve.
