Abstract
Multiculturalism-based pedagogy is harmful to racialized and Indigenous students due to its lack of acknowledgment of power structures and systemic racism. Multiculturalist rhetoric continues in Ontario schools today, although the term multiculturalism has largely been replaced by terms such as equity, inclusivity, and diversity. This chapter will offer some critiques of multiculturalism along with an analysis of the Grade 10 Canadian History curricula from 1973 onwards to analyze the various changes it makes and to understand whether these changes contribute to dismantling racism or whether they continue to perpetuate systemic inequities. Although significant changes have been made to the curriculum, multiculturalist rhetoric that works to erase ongoing colonial and racial violence continues in the curriculum today.
