Abstract
This project came about because I did not believe that Sergei Diaghilev could have found such a large and receptive audience for ballet in 1909 if Parisians had not had an established creative ballet culture of their own.Like everyone before me, I began by studying the repertoire of the Paris Opéra and was disappointed with what I found.What I discovered later was not what I expected, and I might not have found it at all had it not been for the pioneering research of Hélène Laplace-Claverie.I would like to thank her for her advice and encouragement at the very beginning of my research.I would also like to thank Vincent Warren, then head librarian at the École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec, who presented me with what was at the time a rare copy of the book that instigated this project, Laplace-Claverie's Écrire pour la danse: Les livrets de ballet de Théophile Gautier à Jean Cocteau (1870-1914).
