Multiple access (MA) has long been the “pearls in the crown” for each generation of mobile communications networks. The evolution from the fifth generation (5G) toward the sixth generation (6G) brings new usage scenarios and new challenges for MA design, which calls for the development of next-generation multiple access (NGMA) technologies. The main objective of this book titled “Next Generation Multiple Access” is to provide a comprehensive overview of the novel technologies for NGMA. In this introductory chapter, we first discuss the road to develop NGMA by identifying the stringent requirements for future wireless networks and the key concept of NGMA. We then discuss two possible candidates for NGMA, namely non-orthogonal multiple access and massive access. Finally, we provide the outline of the remaining chapters of this book.
