Abstract
hen many people think of 9/11, images of the Twin Towers in New York quickly come to mind.For the people of Chile, their September 11 was in 1973 when a USsupported military coup overthrew the "first elected revolutionary socialist government in the world" led by Salvador Allende.Liisa North and her colleagues have done a great service in documenting how ecumenical churches, civil society organizations, unions, and others re-shaped a reluctant Canadian government's response to the anti-democratic coup.Churches, civil society, and labour mobilized across the country to press the Canadian government to condemn the coup, to welcome refugees and political prisoners, and to take on the Canadian corporations investing in the Junta.It marked an important political moment and a turning point in the churches' public role as a voice of conscience to the nation.
