Chapter9."They found their way home… through the rivers, through the air":Anne MichaelsIn the literature on the subject, the terms "bog people" and "bog bodies" refer to mummified bodies from the Iron Age found in peat bogs in northern Europe (Denmark, Jutland).In the years 2004-2005, they were shown at the exhibition "The Mysterious Bog People," 435 which arousedalot of controversy, especially in Canada, and gaverise to adiscussion about the exhibition of human remains and the ethical ramifications of this type of activity. 436Anne Michaels's1 996 novel FugitiveP ieces opens with am onologue by the main character, aH olocaust survivor Jakob Beer, who calls himself a "bog-boy" 437 (FP 5) and compares himself to the "To llund Man, Grauballe Man" and to "the boy they uprooted in the middle of Franz Josef Street" (FP 5).These comparisons and metaphors are not part of that discussion.Preceding it, they are part of ar ichly documented reflectiononthe dead body, undertaken by Michaels in the context of the Holocaust and other natural disasters in reference to the mystery of "peat-bog corpses," 438 already mentioned by D. M.
