Abstract
This chapter introduces the key concepts surrounding the First Quarter Storm (FQS). The FQS was a rare political opportunity that resulted in a mass radicalization of youth, under the ideological leadership of a Communist party aligned with a tremendous upsurge of working-class struggle. After being denied access to Plaza Miranda, the Movement for a Democratic Philippines adopted a new strategy of people's marches on national television. The danger of dictatorship grew while the social force capable of resisting it remained unorganized. The chapter provides an overview of the Philippine Society and Revolution, which contains historical and theoretical weight to Jose Maria Sison's core political conception.
