ESCEPTICISMO Y ARTE El concepto de equilibrio psicológico es un foco central del debate de los antiguos escépticos sobre sus objetivos y métodos.El escepticismo surgió, según dicen, cuando «personas de gran carácter», perturbadas por no saber qué versiones de las cosas debían aceptar, comenzaron a investigar sobre la verdad, para poder liberarse de esta perturbación (Pirrón 1.12, 26) 1 .Entonces descubrieron que no podían inclinarse hacia una de dos opciones contradictorias de igual peso.Estando las opciones tan equilibradas, suspendieron todo juicio al respecto.Tras esto descubrieron que de esa suspensión del juicio seguía «tal cual» la misma liberación de la perturbación que habían estado buscando.Su experiencia, según contaban, era justo igual que la del pintor Apeles cuando intentó pintar la baba espumante de un caballo sobre su pelaje.Frustrado por su falta de éxito, arrojó su esponja contra el cuadro: y la esponja dejó precisamente el efecto que quería conseguir.El equilibrio psicológico como elemento crucial del proceso de investigación filosófica se ha vuelto a convertir en un elemento central del pensamiento contemporáneo, con la idea de John Rawls de «equilibrio reflexivo», que desarrolla en Una teoría de la justicia (TJ), sus posteriores Dewey Lectures,
