Abstract
Gilles Carle est considéré par plusieurs comme le plus américain des réalisateurs québécois. Ce titre relève notamment de son utilisation de styles musicaux populaires américains et de la mise en scène d’acteurs et de personnages issus de ces milieux. Cet article, adoptant une approche ouverte à l’histoire et à la poïétique, se présente sous la forme d’un essai comparatif des représentations du rock et du country-western dans La Mort d’un bûcheron (1973) et dans Fantastica (1980). L’auteur s’y attarde à deux acteurs-chanteurs, Carle ayant dans un premier temps mis en scène Willie Lamothe, icône fantaisiste du western, avant de miser sur Lewis Furey, à l’époque chanteur populaire aux élans expérimentaux. Il en ressort un constat des filiations et des fractures observables dans les imageries proposées par Carle. Si les ruptures classiques liées à la modernité et au conservatisme sont présentes, un schème opérant autour des notions de spectacle et de variétés semble chapeauter la présentation de ces styles a priori contradictoires.
