One of the main characteristics of the smart grid is the availability of detailed and continuous measurements, taken with high resolution at various points of the distribution system. Leveraging the quantity and quality of information that can be extracted by such recording, this paper proposes a set of new indices to characterise voltage sags in distribution systems. These indices are currently evaluated and proposed to be included in the next revision of IEEE Standard 1564, but they may be also adopted by other standardisation bodies across the world. Accurate characterisation of voltage sags will allow for a more accurate monitoring of the grid behaviour, and will be a useful tool for power system operators and customers.
