L’article propose d’analyser le traitement du lieu en tant qu’espace de construction de soi du personnage à travers l’étude des longs métrages réalisés par Denis Côté. Sont ciblés la nature des personnages et les moyens par lesquels ils se définissent à l’intérieur du cadre par rapport au lieu où ils se situent ainsi que leur capacité à s’adapter, ou non, à celui-ci. On verra comment la nature des lieux, désignés géographiquement mais pourtant d’apparence anonyme, jouera sur la manière dont les personnages se présentent et agissent. Au détriment de la relation entre personnages, la relation personnage-lieu devient le noeud central des films de Denis Côté. En somme, la construction du lieu par Côté précède et détermine la construction du personnage, qui se retrouve subordonné au monde qu’il habite.
