Abstract
Quelle est la représentation de la petite ville dans le cinéma québécois récent ? Quatre éléments caractérisent ces petites villes dans les films des années 2000 à 2015 et sont parfois renforcés par la rigueur de l’hiver : la proximité avec la nature et l’assimilation de la petite ville à la ruralité; une sociabilité importante; ce sont des villes mono-industrielles et le plus souvent cette industrie est présentée comme « en panne » ; enfin, l’absence de mémoire collective qui rend impossible tout avenir collectif. Face à cette situation, les solutions pour les protagonistes sont peu nombreuses : le départ, la mort, et rester sur place n’est possible qu’au prix d’un important renoncement. À travers ce parcours, il est possible de cerner si ces petites villes sont des lieux, au sens de Marc Augé, c’est-à-dire si elles sont dotées de dimensions relationnelles, identitaires et historiques, et comment elles s’insèrent dans la (post)modernité.
