Abstract
Entre le jugement de la Cour suprême indienne de 2014 reconnaissant un « troisième genre » et l’entrée en application du Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act en 2019, de nombreuses manifestations ont eu lieu à travers tout le pays. L’objectif était de protester contre certaines mesures législatives en préparation. Pour la première fois, les personnes concernées ont pu s’exprimer à travers de nombreux débats au sujet de leur droit citoyen et sur la diversité de genre qu’ils incarnent. Toutefois, le terme transgenre , retenu dans la loi, ne permet pas d’exprimer tous les contextes ni toutes les langues et encore moins les différences régionales. À partir du portrait de deux militantes transgenres et d’une ethnographie sur la terminologie vernaculaire utilisée en Assam et au Manipur, deux régions méconnues dans les études sur les minorités sexuelles et de genre en Inde, j’examine différents niveaux de revendications et d’influences qui participent au processus de construction identitaire des personnes transgenres.
