The Paradoxical Reality of Canadian Multiculturalism, as Narrated by 1.5-Generation Korean Immigrants

Abstract
This paper investigates the current state of Canadian multiculturalism, both as an ideology and lived reality, as perceived among the sample of ten 1.5-generation Korean immigrants. The analysis of the findings from individual semi-structured interviews reveals multiple paradoxes. Across the narratives, the multiculturalist ideology is demonstrated as a unifying force promoting diversity and inclusiveness, yet often falling short in forging a strong Canadian identity. The lived experiences highlight coexistence within Canadian society and the resulting in-group pride in relation to national identity, while also illustrating social divisions shaped by racial discrimination and identity struggles. As a result, the multicultural identity imagined in the minds of the participants display both positive and negative effects on their national identification. Despite limitations, these insights emphasize the need to address these paradoxes, fostering dialogues for a more resilient multicultural and hybrid Canadian identity.
