Assessing performance of student pilots is a long-standing problem. The National Research Council of Canada led an investigation to relate physiological measures to pilot trainee performance. Twenty-four university students participated in a simulated flight training exercise. The investigators encountered a significant challenge in determining the best method to determine and measure flight performance in this environment. The authors developed a novel model to represent student strategy and calculate performance errors. The model uses a piece-wise linear velocity representation of student maneuver trajectory that simultaneously satisfies all task criteria: target altitude, target heading, desired vertical speed and angle of bank. The method is described and the advantages of using the method are explored. The method opens up the possibility of automated flight instruction that uses automated scoring procedures.
