Dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, de nouveaux publics lecteurs de théâtre vont émerger avec la renaissance des formes théâtrales de l’Antiquité. La tragédie française s’adressera en effet à un lectorat formé aux lettres antiques ou intéressé par cette littérature. Mais le genre tragique sera aussi, dès sa naissance, l’un des lieux où s’exprimeront les inquiétudes des réformés. Théâtre de combat souvent polémique, la tragédie dite « protestante » se caractérise de fait par une tension, un conflit même, entre la mobilisation de cette forme savante, conçue a priori comme une forme noble destinée à une élite intellectuelle et politique, et l’objectif de prosélytisme des dramaturges réformés, pour qui il s’agit de rejoindre un public plus étendu, qui ne se limite pas aux savants ou à la cour. Cette tension est perceptible dans les premières éditions d’Abraham sacrifiant de Théodore de Bèze et des Tragédies saintes de Louis Des Masures.
