Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a estrutura, o desenvolvimento e a funcionalidade de famílias de idosos em fase terminal em cuidados paliativos. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, desenvolvido com cinco famílias, cujos dados foram coletados por meio da técnica de entrevista, utilizando-se dois instrumentos: o genograma e o ecomapa. O material empírico foi analisado à luz do Modelo Calgary de Avaliação Familiar. Os dados empíricos obtidos a partir da avaliação familiar, averiguados na categoria estrutural, demonstraram que a maioria das famílias, quanto à organização, é do tipo extensa e que a figura feminina é a provedora do lar. Quanto ao desenvolvimento das famílias, observou-se que, em todas elas, as mulheres têm a função de cuidadoras. No aspecto funcional, independentemente do rendimento familiar mensal, os pacientes idosos mantinham suas condições de higiene satisfatórias. Espera-se que os resultados desta pesquisa possam subsidiar o planejamento da assistência de enfermagem através da avaliação integral da família, com o fim de contribuir para o desenvolvimento de habilidades próprias da Enfermagem, visando atender às necessidades das famílias de idosos com doença em fase final de vida.
