Abstract
Ouverte dans la province de Québec en 1869, la prison commune de Sherbrooke (prison Winter) acquiert rapidement une réputation dure, sévère et, surtout, insalubre : malgré différentes phases de rénovations à travers l’histoire du bâtiment, les conditions de vie à la prison s’améliorent très peu et mènent à son ultime fermeture, en 1990. Depuis, la prison Winter est laissée à l’abandon. Le Musée d’histoire de Sherbrooke souhaite en faire l’acquisition afin de la transformer en centre d’interprétation et y organiser tant des expositions que des visites guidées et même des jeux d’évasion. En plus des enjeux financiers liés au projet, la revitalisation de la prison Winter soulève des questions de fond. Pourquoi, en effet, faudrait-il sauver ce bâtiment ? L’article expose les modalités envisagées de la reconversion de la prison Winter en musée et les stratégies de transmission qui permettront d’éviter les écueils liés au « dark tourism ».
