Abstract
北極域には，人口が数百人の小規模集落が多数散在している。他の地域と通じる道路はなく，主要な移動や輸送の手段は船舶や航空機である。元々は先住民が自然と共生する伝統的な生活を営んでいたが，今日ではさまざまな物品が流入し，欧米風の生活が一般的になっている。結果的にわれわれの社会と類似の廃棄物が発生するが，輸送手段が限られていること，他地域とは離隔していることなどの点から，すべての廃棄物が無造作に投棄もしくは野焼きされてきた。グリーンランドも例に違わず，廃棄物の処理，処分に多くの課題を抱えてきた。本稿では，グリーンランド国内での小規模集落における廃棄物処分の具体的な事例をいくつか紹介した後に，グリーンランド自治政府がこれまで取ってきた廃棄物管理政策を概観する。さらに2020年に策定された廃棄物処理計画2020-2031において大きな転換が今後の10年間に見込まれていることを示す。
