Abstract
Watteau est un artiste tenant un rôle très particulier à Valenciennes. Considéré comme le premier artiste d’importance né dans cette ville, il est perçu, d’une certaine manière, comme le premier artiste de l’école valenciennoise. Cette survalorisation de Watteau reste aujourd’hui bien marquée et s’inscrit dans un processus ancien de mise en place d’une figure mythique d’ancêtre dans lequel des personnalités ou institutions valenciennoises, comme le Musée des beaux-arts, ont tenu des rôles clefs.
