Cet article analyse, à partir d'une série de textes du XVIe siècle relatant les voyages du capitaine Jacques Cartier vers le Canada, les enjeux politiques des initiatives d'exploration du Nouveau Monde à partir des années 1530, et la façon dont les traductions et éditions de ces récits de voyage, soumis à des aléas linguistiques et matériels, ont contribué à la fois à justifier ces voyages auprès de leurs commanditaires et à agir sur l'opinion publique des pays en présence.
