un'isola del Mar Mediterraneo visitata da San Paolo, per incontrare i migranti provenienti dall'Africa.Il secondo viaggio si svolse nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo e nel Sud Sudan, dal 2 al 7 luglio, per un pellegrinaggio ecumenico di pace.La terza visita si ebbe in Canada, dal 24 al 30 luglio, per incontrare le popolazioni indigene e chiedere perdono per un'evangelizzazione che non aveva rispettato la loro cultura.Il quarto viaggio si tenne in Kazakistan, dal 13 al 15 settembre, per partecipare al VII Congresso dei leader delle religioni mondiali e tradizionali.In quell'occasione il Papa ribadì la necessità di abbandonare il fondamentalismo religioso che inquina e corrode ogni fede, instillando sospetto e disprezzo nei confronti della religione, come se fosse un fattore destabilizzante della società moderna, quando al contrario le religioni non sono un problema, ma parte della soluzione per una convivenza armoniosa tra le persone.Il quinto viaggio fu nel Regno del Bahrein, dal 3 al 6 novembre, in occasione del Bahrein Forum for Dialogue: East and West for Human Coexistence.
