The sociology of science and technology is a subdisciplinary specialization focused on the cultures, networks, and social structures characteristic of scientific and engineering activity and the social and cultural consequences of those activities. Theoretical insights about the production of scientific knowledge were extended to technology, resulting in the body of knowledge known by the current label, the sociology of science and technology. Robert Merton gave a sociological twist to the historical question of why the scientific revolution occurred in Europe rather than other times or places. A central feature of the Mertonian paradigm was the way it complemented logical positivism and circumscribed the features of scientific activity subject to sociological scrutiny. Kuhn, through close examination of the Copernican Revolution and other major shifts in scientific understanding, documented the role of sociological factors in scientific development. Following the science wars, the field entered a period of eclecticism and continuing diversification which has continued to this date.
