Abstract
Reflecting their architectural form and ritual function, special buildings are known by the terms ashurkhanah (“house of the tenth”), imambara, chilla, bargah, and imambargah . It is possible to enter most mosques outside of prayer times, although some do indicate whether or not women are allowed to enter. In Hyderabad and throughout South India, Shi‘a participate in mourning assemblies to remember the suffering and martyrdom of Imam Husain and his supporters at the battle of Karbala in buildings known as an ashurkhanah . These explicitly Shi‘i religious spaces were constructed to display tomb replicas of Imam Husain's Karbala shrine-tomb, metal crests and standards, particularly the palm insignia of Hazrat ‘Abbas, and other material objects that help Shi‘i devotees cultivate feelings of devotion for the Imams and Ahl-e Bait.
