Abstract
In this chapter, the authors explore different facets of women's votive practices that enable them to access the intercessory powers of the Imams and Ahl-e Bait. As a home-based ritual of supplication, food is central to the performance of the dastarkhwan . For much of the past 600 years that sizable Shi‘i populations have lived in the subcontinent, pilgrimage to the major tomb-shrines of the Imams and Ahl-e Bait in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the Hijaz were impossible dreams for most due to distance, the prohibitive cost and dangers of travel, and political rivalries. While it may seem that South Asian Shi‘ism is only about mourning, celebrations of the Imams birthdays and other religiously significant events also shape everyday religious life.
