Abstract
First Nations people, defined by the World Health Organization as those who first lived in a region and have distinct cultural traditions, knowledge, and language 1, are at high risk of chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Beyond a higher incidence of CKD risk factors in these populations, CKD may also occur at an earlier stage of life in indigenous people and progress more quickly to kidney failure owing to specific environmental or genetic factors 2.
