Abstract
Abstract Drawing on PhD fieldwork on the practice and experience of ‘welcome’ in Berlin in the wake of the so‐called ‘refugee crisis’ of 2015–2016, this article engages with the ethics and practicalities of note‐taking. It does so by focusing on the production of particular spaces of welcome and hostility in and around one neighbourhood in particular, Neukölln, an important place of arrival for newcomers both historically and in the present day. This article is about losing the notebook and finding new ways of approaching people and places in ways that centre reciprocity and an ethics of care.
