Abstract
Traversing much of the present-day eastern seaboard of the United States, members of Verrazzano's expedition went ashore several times to make contact with the natives, with varied results. Verrazzano's voyage yielded some information for the French, but it would be a decade before they would send another voyage to the Americas. In 1534, French mariner Jacque Cartier set out to explore the St Lawrence to see if it did indeed lead to the hoped-for Northwest Passage. In 1564, French Huguenots, fleeing the Wars of Religion in their homeland, established Fort Caroline at the mouth of St John's River on the east coast of the Florida peninsula. Beginning around 1580, European traders, primarily French, began to journey regularly to the mouth of the St Lawrence to trade with the natives. For the next four decades, the Jesuits would be the only missionary order in Canada.
