The Settlement Experiences of First-Generation Indo-Guyanese Women in the Greater Toronto Area

Abstract
The settlement experiences of first-generation Indo-Guyanese women in Toronto, Ontario remains historically understudied with a dearth of literature that exclusively focuses on this demographic. In response, this study aims to bridge these gaps in Canadian literature by presenting key findings derived from qualitative semi-structured interviews with eight first- generation Indo-Guyanese women who shared their challenges, successes, and overall processes and needs encountered during their settlement journeys in Toronto. Through an intersectionality and Indo-Caribbean feminist theoretical lens, this study also critically examines how participants’ settlement experiences are/were impacted by larger Canadian institutions and power structures along the parameters of their race, ethnicity, gender, and immigration status.
