Cet article explore l’importance de différentes difficultés dans l’expérience d’études postsecondaires d’étudiants adultes inscrits au cégep et cherche à cerner comment ces difficultés changent durant leur parcours scolaire. Bien qu’il y ait présence chez les étudiants adultes de facteurs positifs (motivation élevée, investissement de temps important, choix d’études clair) relatifs à la persévérance et à la réussite des études postsecondaires, leur taux de diplomation est considérablement inférieur à celui des étudiants plus jeunes. Il semble que le parcours scolaire des étudiants adultes soit parsemé de différents obstacles qui sont souvent ignorés par les directions d’établissement et qui mériteraient d’être approfondis. En s’appuyant sur les données d’une enquête longitudinale (de 2020 à 2023) réalisée auprès d’un échantillon de 1 015 étudiants âgés de 24 ans et plus, l’article présente une analyse des difficultés situationnelles, dispositionnelles et institutionnelles rencontrées par ceux-ci. Les analyses sont effectuées en prenant en compte trois caractéristiques des étudiants adultes : le genre, la parentalité et le travail rémunéré. Les résultats montrent que les difficultés situationnelles sont les plus fréquemment identifiées, dont certaines qui gagnent de l’importance au fil des semestres, suivies par les difficultés dispositionnelles, qui, pour leur part, voient leur importance décroître à travers le parcours scolaire, puis, finalement, par les difficultés institutionnelles. Deux profils d’étudiants adultes identifient davantage de difficultés, notamment situationnelles : les femmes et les parents étudiants. D’autres travaux de recherche sont nécessaires pour mieux comprendre comment ces difficultés influencent les décisions d’abandon des études chez les étudiants adultes.
