Abstract
A camera tracks smoothly over the grid ceiling of a bathhouse in Québec City, following the protagonist of Robert Lepage’s cinematic debut The Confessional (1995) as he looks for his estranged brother in the private cabins of the gay sauna Hippocampe—an echo of the titular church confessional cabins. Set up with scenes inspired by classical paintings and sculptures, each cabin becomes a condensed museum or theater of history and culture. Using the bathhouse and other underground erotic spaces to move viewers between eras and characters, Lepage invites us to explore the semiotic and atmospheric potential of ordinary objects and spaces as gateways to memory and allegory. The mesmerizing overhead cinematography highlights the complexity of bathhouses—the dark labyrinthine spaces to be explored over and over, echoing the urbanism of a tightly built city. Architecturally, bathhouses and steam rooms range from simple structures to much more adorned and complex networks of chambers that both fascinate and intrigue, shaped by spiritual, medical, hygienic, and erotic grounds. This chapter examines the gay bathhouse as a typology of interior urbanism.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
