Canadian Academic Interior Urbanism as a Climatic and Cultural Response

Abstract
There is a unique form of academic interior urbanism found throughout Canada that responds to its extreme climates and unique landscapes. Across the country, university campuses employ intricate tunnel systems that shape a multidimensional experience combining nodes with layered programs to create interiorized public space. Due to their vastness and complexity, academic interior urbanism in Canada is an exceptional precedent for designing interiorized public environments. This chapter examines contemporary examples by distilling important attributes, as well as comparing the shared and divergent qualities of these spaces. This research surveys academic interior urbanism in UQAM-Université du Québec à Montréal, The McEwen School of Architecture at Laurentian University, and the Carleton School of Architecture. These campuses offer pragmatic design solutions that uniquely blend architecture, urbanism, and landscapes into interiorized public environments.
