Abstract
Muonium is formed in the final stage of positive muon thermalization, but the details depend on the density of the medium. In low-pressure gases isolated collisions lead to successive charge exchanges, and the eventual muonium fraction depends on the outcome of the final charge exchange. In condensed matter a more apt description is that of the terminal spur of a radiation track. The spur model explains how muon spin polarization is partitioned between muonium and diamagnetic molecules, with a fraction lost due to spin exchange with paramagnetic species produced by radiolysis. Muonium reacts in similar manner to hydrogen atoms, as shown by a survey of typical reactions. The thermalization of high-energy negative muons is similar to that of positive muons except at low energies, where they are captured by atoms of the medium and behave more like heavy electrons.
