Recent developments have placed emphasis on providing increased control and options to the patient in monitoring for potential medical issues and in managing one's healthcare or well-being. This chapter describes techniques for medical decision making using attributes derived from signals and other medical or clinical information. It presents a few illustrative case studies. A number of methods for pattern classification, decision making, and evaluation of the results of classification are reviewed and illustrated. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) is described as diagnosis made by a physician or medical specialist by using the output of a computerized scheme for signal or image analysis as a diagnostic aid. Two variations in CAD have been recognized: CADe for computer-aided detection of abnormal segments or events of interest and CADx for computer-aided diagnosis with labeling of the detected parts in terms of the presence or absence of a certain disease or abnormality.
