Neuromesodermal progenitor (NMPs) give rise to neural and mesodermal tissues during axis elongation. In their study, Fay Cooper, Anestis Tsakiridis and colleagues reveal the role of Notch signalling in NMP differentiation and its role in Hox gene expression.
