Abstract
La tour du château d’Esplantas, bâtie au xiiie siècle, à la demande du seigneur de Mercœur, vassal du roi de France, symbolise la présence du pouvoir seigneurial, mais également la présence du pouvoir royal dans l’espace. Cet édifice impose par sa dimension, sa monumentalité et sa nouveauté architecturale, marquant ainsi les progrès de la « francisation » dans le sud du royaume. La « grande tour » continue, jusqu’à la fin de l’Ancien Régime, son rôle de représentation de la légitimité, du pouvoir seigneurial dans son espace. Elle demeure encore un repère dans le paysage et un marqueur de l’identité locale, à la période contemporaine et toujours actuellement.
