Abstract
2 275 élèves calédoniens ont rédigé entre fin 2018 et début 2019 une histoire de leur pays pour étudier le développement de leur conscience historique. Ces productions montrent que l’école peine à assurer la transmission d’une histoire commune au service d’un vivre ensemble apaisé. Tous les élèves ne choisissent pas de raconter l’histoire de la Nouvelle-Calédonie et, quand ils le font, ils sont loin d’en livrer le même récit, entre savoirs localisés et effets de territoire, avec aussi la cohabitation de plusieurs visions du passé. L’école n’est pas la source privilégiée des informations mobilisées, notamment chez les élèves kanak où prédominent des modes de transmission familiaux et communautaires. Les orientations identifiables manifestent des oppositions souvent assez tranchées, distinguant là encore la manière dont les élèves kanak comprennent et interprètent l’histoire.
