Abstract
The end of the Seven Years War in 1763 proved but a short respite. Within little more than a decade, Britain would again be fighting overseas. By the second half of the eighteenth century Britain had become the most dynamic state in Europe. Virtually all British politicians were concerned about the expense of maintaining the military security of North America. John Wilkes was a businessman who had entered the Commons under aristocratic patronage in 1757. By returning from exile in 1768 Wilkes re-injected himself into the political consciousness of the nation, for his cause attracted support all over the country, not just in London, and from a population that went beyond those entitled to vote. Ironically, the American Revolution turned out to be as much a long-term success for the home country as it was for the colonies. It solidified British control over Canada.
