L’engagement traditionnel des mouvements LGBTQ pour la reconnaissance de leurs droits implique la dissociation des normativités civiles et religieuses discriminatoires envers les minorités sexuelles et de genre. Au Québec, cet engagement a marqué les débats provincial et fédéral sur la redéfinition du mariage civil, contribuant à faire entrer les mouvements LGBTQ dans un combat dont la portée laïque est indéniable. Toutefois, tant ces communautés que leurs engagements sont longtemps demeurés dans l’ombre des travaux, ou même des récits sur la laïcité. Ils en sont des impensés. Cet article part de la prémisse selon laquelle les militant.e.s LGBTQ seraient ainsi des militant.e.s laïques qui s’ignorent. Il propose de mettre en lumière comment leurs rapports aux normativités juridiques, religieuses et sociales sont révélateurs de leurs conceptions de la « laïcité ». Il s’appuie sur l’analyse d’entrevues semi-directives réalisées auprès de 21 Québécois.e.s issu.e.s des communautés LGBTQ qui ont été amené.e.s à s’engager ou à se prononcer publiquement sur deux enjeux de laïcité (mariage civil et port de symboles religieux). Tou.te.s ont eu des responsabilités significatives dans au moins un organisme militant national ou régional, ou ont pris part activement aux débats sur la laïcité en tant que personnalité publique.
