Les partisans et détracteurs des femmes s’affrontant par textes interposés depuis le XVe siècle, leurs arguments se retrouvent dans plusieurs Institutions ou manuels de civilité à l’adresse des hommes et des femmes de l’élite européenne renaissante dont les versions françaises ont connu un large succès d’imprimerie au cours du XVe siècle. L’étude s’attache aux échos et mises en scène des débats sur l’excellence et la dignité des femmes dans les versions françaises les plus diffusées du Courtisan de Castiglione, de l’Institution de la femme chrestienne de Vivès et de L’horloge des princes de Guevara, comme dans l’Institution des princes chrétiens de Boaistuau. La peur du renversement des pouvoirs, les exemples de femmes fortes, les dénégations misogynes et les voix des contestataires qu’on y lit rendent paradoxales les injonctions à la perfection féminine dans un contexte de renforcement de l’ordre du genre et d’explosion des discours contradictoires sur la nature féminine.
