Abstract
L’umorismo ha radici antiche ed è stato oggetto di studio di varie discipline dalla sociologia, alla letteratura, alla linguistica. È stato evidenziato come possa avere valenza inclusiva o esclusiva in base a come venga utilizzato. La commedia etnica è stata impiegata dalle generazioni successive di emigranti per esprimere un senso di appartenenza. Sfruttando l’umorismo, comportamenti ed atteggiamenti tipici degli emigrati di prima generazione che sono stati per lungo tempo oggetto di denigrazione da parte della società mainstream, sono stati trasformati dalle nuove generazioni in caratteristiche distintive del gruppo ed elementi di identificazione identitaria. Questo articolo si propone di verificare come, nella commedia etnica, il linguaggio venga utilizzato dai giovani di discendenza italiana in Australia e Canada come espressione identitaria. Pertanto, saranno analizzati degli show del comico australiano Joe Avati e alcuni episodi della serie web Nonna Maria Canada.
