Abstract
Le tour de la France par deux enfants (1877), livre de lecture courante illustré de plus de 200 gravures, s’inscrit dans la filiation de ces fictions pédagogiques qui entendent délivrer un savoir en recourant à un dispositif simple mais efficace : des personnages parcourent un territoire qui est décrit à mesure de leur progression. Ainsi prend forme un portrait délimité par un cadre (à savoir des frontières), pris dans une série de différentes temporalités (celles de « l’intrigue », de l’histoire d’une nation, des réceptions successives de l’ouvrage) et se mettant au service d’une visée didactique et idéologique. À la croisée de différents genres (le roman édifiant, le texte viatique et la littérature pédagogique), le livre donne à voir et à comprendre, par l’image et le texte, un pays qui, quelle que soit la diversité de ses aspects, renvoie, comme le portrait, à une identité et à une totalité.
