Abstract
Voyageur depuis sa jeunesse, écrivain par vocation, photographe par nécessité et iconographe par choix, Nicolas Bouvier dresse dans le volume analysé ici, paru aux Éditions Rencontre, un portrait du Japon des années 1960. Nous présentons brièvement ses précurseurs dans le contexte éditorial pour essayer d’établir l’emplacement singulier de l’ouvrage, soit dans la collection « L’atlas des voyages » soit dans les publications de Bouvier. Notre analyse vise à examiner la spécificité du binôme image-texte mis en place par le voyageur genevois. L’étude de trois exemples où l’interaction entre la composante verbale et la composante visuelle prend forme nous permet d’illustrer le rapport que Bouvier entretient avec le Japon et, par conséquent, de comprendre la manière dont il conduit ses lecteurs à la découverte de l’altérité.
